Daily Cleaning: After each use, remove food particles with a nylon brush or dishcloth. Wash with warm soapy water, scrubbing the entire surface, edges, and bottom. Rinse thoroughly, dry with a dish towel, then stand on edge to air dry for at least one hour. Never put your board in the dishwasher, soak it in water, or use steel wool or bleach, as these will damage the wood.
Regular Maintenance: Apply beeswax oil wood conditioner monthly or whenever the board appears dry or dull. After cleaning and drying completely, rub a small amount of oil into the entire surface including edges. Let it absorb for one hour, then wipe off excess. This protective barrier prevents cracking and extends your board's life by maintaining even moisture throughout the wood.
Proper Storage: Store your cutting board vertically or on edge in a well-ventilated area to prevent warping. Keep it away from heat sources like stoves and ovens, and avoid direct sunlight. Never use your board as a hot plate, as heat will damage the glue joints and over-dry the wood, causing cracks.
Remember: Wood naturally expands and contracts with moisture changes. The key to preventing cracks is maintaining even moisture throughout the board. Clean the entire surface (not just the cutting area), oil regularly, and allow proper air circulation during storage. With these simple care steps, your cutting board will remain beautiful and functional for generations.
